Memorial Day Weekend, May 29, 30, 31, 2010
From classic to cutting edge, some of the best work in the arts will be on
view as we kick off the 34th Annual Paseo Arts Festival on Memorial Day
weekend. There's a festive aura of anticipation as art-lovers, music-lovers,
people-watchers and gaggles of families stroll through the Paseo Arts
District, a charming cultural tradition of OKC.
The Paseo features 75 artists, selected by expert jurors, as participants in
the festival. All types of art and all mediums are represented.
Festival-goers prowl the booths and galleries for the perfect ceramic
platter or coffee mug, squiggles of sterling silver and other hand-made
jewelry, soft and sensuous art-you-can-wear, sculptural statements and
paintings and photography of every description. View map to find your
favorite artists.
The festival's two stages Wimgo.com South Stage and OK Gazette North Stage
will showcase the talent of Oklahoma's best musicians and entertainers.
Restaurants and galleries on the street will be open during festival hours.
A free children's area "Artists of the Future" will give budding artists a
chance to explore their creativity and have fun. Hours are Saturday and
Sunday from 10am-6pm and Monday from 10a-5p and located at the corner of
29th and Paseo in front of Contemporary Art Gallery. Children will have the
opportunity to make sock puppets, clay sculpture and spin art.
Paper Play Theatre...Every Child Has a Story to Tell ...The bustling
atmosphere of the Paseo Arts Festival inspires Paper Play Theatre, a
hands-on multi arts experience for children of all ages. The studio of
StarDanceSwan opens to wonder-making from 12 - 6pm each day of the festival.
This year’s theme, “ImpossibiliTea!” invites children to have fun
constructing puppets made of paper, glitz, light and shadows. See
StarDanceSwan’s performers dance and sing each child’s puppet story. Paper
Play Theatre is designed by StarDanceSwan and community arts educators; it
is supported by the Paseo Arts Association, Inasmuch Foundation and Hobby
Lobby.
Young and emerging artists will be featured in the “Paseo NOW” tent. Help
support these artists as they start their career! Artists from the Oklahoma
Art Guild will be the featured artists for 2010.
The food court at Paseo Drive and 29th will feature traditional festival
food, savory and sweet.
The Paseo Arts Festival now has a shuttle service! Parking will be
available to festival visitors at First Christian Church at 36th and Walker.
The shuttle will run every 15 minutes on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to
9pm and Monday from 10am to 7pm.
Continuing with the tradition of being a “green” festival, the Paseo Arts
Association partners with the Sierra club with the goal of recycling over 75
percent of the waste. This is aluminum and plastic that will not go into
our landfill.
The Paseo is where art and history come alive in Oklahoma City’s vibrant
community of artists. Each year a Paseo artist’s work is featured on the
festival t-shirt and poster. Winnie Hawkins from Studio Six was selected
for 2010. She says, “My work is an investigation of shape and color, using
pure geometric shapes, in varied arrangements in several ongoing series. I
have chosen to work with a finite number of shapes and a limited palette,
often employing fewer than six hues.” Hawkins’ work is featured in the
Oklahoma State Art Collection and has worked as an artist in Oklahoma City
for many years.
Some of our sponsors include Wimgo.com, the Oklahoma Gazette, the City
Sentinel, BancFirst, Inasmuch Foundation, Hobby Lobby, Prima Café, and Adobe
Grill.
