The Magic Lantern Celebration on Paseo

The Magic Lantern Celebration on Paseo Spark imagination! Create a Halloween of light with artists to help inspire. Paseo’s Magic Lantern Celebration offers a family friendly Halloween celebration that is all about imagination. This fantasy is a unique twist to an old tradition, a night of light instead of fright where creativity is the spark. Children are invited to come as they are and transform themselves by finding new ways to make magical costumes and dance. Paseo Artists open their doors to capture the wonder in children on Sunday, October 28 from 2:30 to 6:30 PM.

Children of all ages can come to Paseo in their everyday clothing, but they will not leave looking as they came. On Paseo they can use their own ingenuity to crumple, tear, twist and twirl paper into wearable art. Paper is a more versatile material then anyone can believe and with artists on hand to help, all kinds of critters and characters can come to life. " Going beyond the ordinary is what we encourage", says Lorrie Keller, designer of the event. "We want children to experience the fun in actually making something extraordinary, a character who reflects their own ideas and fanciful selves."

Families can walk from studio to studio on Paseo to build their costumes. Parents are encouraged to create with their children. Paseo Art Space is the site for hats, crowns and what-nots. At Paseo Studio they can be-jeweled with treats too sweet to eat. Painted faces appear at The Art of Yoga. Magic lanterns are made at Old Trinity Gallery. There are pumpkins to paint at Studio Bleu. The Wish Finder awaits to chase fears away at StarDanceSwan.

The celebration does not stop with making costumes. As darkness creeps in all characters and their parents are invited to an impromptu dance on the street to bring a Jack ‘O Lantern to life. Musicians Steve McLinn, Jahruba Lambeth, Linda Christy, and community rhythm makers, with the dancers of Theatre Upon a StarDanceSwan promise a grand finale of spinning and sparkling upon a giant pumpkin labyrinth painted on the street.

Studios, restaurants and businesses on Paseo will be open during the celebration. All children must be accompanied by an adult. The activities will begin at the north end of Paseo at NE 30th and Dewy. All activities are free to the public. The Magic Lantern Celebration is made possible by the Kirkpatrick Family Fund, the Paseo Artist Association and Theatre Upon a StarDanceSwan.
