The Magic Lantern Celebration on Paseo
Spark imagination this Halloween season at the Magic Lantern Celebration on Paseo! Children are invited to create an Autumn celebration, bring a giant pumpkin to life, and watch shadows appear in the windows on Paseo.
Paseo artists open their doors to capture wonder during the Magic Lantern Celebration on Sunday, October 25 from 3:00 to 7:00 PM. The event offers a unique twist to an old tradition, a night of light instead of fright. Children can jump into their own creativity and have lots of fun doing it. Toddlers to teens are invited to come to Paseo and transform themselves by finding ways to make their own original costumes, lanterns and dance.
Children are welcome to come in their everyday clothing, once on Paseo their transformation takes place. Up and down the street, "playshops" will be waiting with paper , pumpkins, leaves and bits of glitz to inspire works of art. Families can walk from studio to studio to build costumes befitting the season. In the spirit of fall play, children can crumple, tear, and twist paper into their own wearable art. Faces will glow with the colors of shining stars. A Shadow Chaser awaits to make wishes from light. Find out who is a Magic Lantern.
"Going beyond the ordinary is encouraged. Everyone can expect to feel the creative spark" says Lorrie Keller of Theatre Upon a StarDanceSwan and designer of the event. " Magic Lantern is all about the natural creativity every child possesses. Children can work side by side artists in the creative process. Artists, children and parents all share fascination as costumes grow out of inspiration. Parents are encouraged to create with their children."
The celebration culminates in the Spin n’ Sparkle, a display of the costumes created during the day. At twilight children and parents are invited to an impromptu dance on the street. Musicians Steve McLinn and Jahruba Lambeth with dancers of StarDanceSwan promise a finale where everyone gets to dance in a giant pumpkin labyrinth.
Community artists are planning a surprise to culminate the evening. As children leave Paseo a show of shadows will appear in the studio windows. Paseo shadow windows can be viewed each night throughout the week leading up to Halloween.
Rain or shine, the Magic Lantern Celebration is free to the public. Donations are appreciated to help with the costs of the event. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Activities begin at the north end of Paseo at NW 30 and Dewy. The Magic Lantern Celebration is made possible by the Oklahoma Arts Council, Paseo Arts Association and Theatre Upon a StarDanceSwan.
